The Gadsden Arts Center

Inside Out: Beth Appleton Assemblage and Deborah LaGrasse Sculpture:   Works on exhibition at the Gadsden Arts Center in Quincy, Florida. August through November, 2012.

“It was very serendipitous for Deborah and I to collaborate on this exhibition. Our worlds are very different–Deborah has traveled so much lately outside to far away places–India and now China and I have found a new world hidden away inside a drop of water! Read More...

Our lives influence our works in different ways and yet the compatibility we share is very profound.

When the director of the Center, Grace Maloy, invited me to exhibit, she asked if I would like to invite another artist to show with me. The Gadsden Arts Center boasts a dynamic space well designed to showcase sculpture and wall pieces. I immediately thought of Deborah’s work and I held my breath until she said yes.

I have always admired her sculpture; once when our works exhibited next to each other in a group exhibition I was struck by the dialogue; together they seemed to resonate a new language. It is exciting to now exhibit at the Gadsden Arts Center with Deborah’s powerful works.

It is also fitting for us to help celebrate this event during the 100 year anniversary of the Bell and Bates building which has been home to the Gadsden Art Center since the year 2000. I feel very lucky and grateful for this opportunity.”

The artist has established much history with the Gadsden Arts Center and Museum over the years. Along with her husband, David Harbaugh, she founded and developed Art in Gadsden, the annual regional exhibition that initiated a spark for what would later become this vital community art museum. She was chosen for the Center’s solo exhibition: Celebration 2000: Gadsden Arts Center Inaugural Exhibition Presents the Watercolor/Cut Paper Assemblages of Beth Appleton. Other invitationals include: Winner’s Circle: An Art in Gadsden Retrospective, 2005, and numerous Art in Gadsden exhibitions.
