My first\u00a0appreciation for art was self taught, found in the rows of kitsch for sale at my aunt\u2019s roadside fruit stand. Silver Springs was my playground; I practiced underwater ballet and dreamed one day I would become a Weekie Wachee mermaid. Today, while lost in art, I can still float. <span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id3540\"   title=\"<em>Read More...<\/em>\"    ><em>Read More...<\/em><\/span><span id='swap-id3540'  class='colomat-swap' style='display:none;'>Close<\/span><div id=\"target-id3540\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\nThe work I create holds this history while it invents\u00a0where to\u00a0go next. Personal experience adds layers that can be seen. Early works celebrated Highwaymen type sunsets while life in New Mexico saturated palettes. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-77\" src=\"https:\/\/bethappleton.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/shapeimage_2-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Mermaid Child c2012 B. Appleton\" width=\"148\" height=\"274\" \/>Years spent on a farm in Quincy cultivated dragon\u2019s blood red and travels\u00a0to Belize brought out the bright yellows.\u00a0A life full of stories weaves through my work.<\/p>\n<p>For the past 30 years, I have worked from my\u00a0studio home on\u00a0the Gulf coast of Florida, a place of boundless inspiration.\u00a0Here, I delight\u00a0in\u00a0tiny marine life\u00a0and\u00a0stand in awe\u00a0of infinite\u00a0sky.<\/p>\n<p>Art is intuitive and exhilarating; it is good for my soul. I hope by sharing it, the viewer will get a spark from it, too, and enjoy the visit to this website.<br \/>\n~ Beth Appleton<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><em><strong>Commentary<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nIn 1989 I was fortunate enough to witness this creative artist begin assembling her first cut paper works and marveled as she developed an art form uniquely her\u00a0own. For over 25 years, Appleton&#8217;s works have been shaped by life on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. New works emerge ever more complex in dimension and abstraction. Bridging the gap between art and science, she is collaborating with microscopists,\u00a0ecologists, marine biologists and\u00a0astronomers.\u00a0With all these new pursuits, one constant remains: her kinetic works are inspiring and magnetic.
